Biote® Frequently Asked Questions

What should I do before I schedule an appointment for Biote treatment?

No fasting is required in advance of the procedure.

What should I do before the Biote pellet procedure?

One week before the procedure, if possible, stop all NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, naproxen sodium, etc.). No fasting in advance of the procedure is required.

What test is required before the insertion of the Biote pellet?

At a minimum, Biote® requires our comprehensive blood panel which you can discuss with your Biote® provider.

What happens during the in-office insertion of the Biote pellet?

During the in-office visit, which only takes a few minutes, patients are brought into the exam room, and the insertion site is numbed. The most common site of insertion is the upper buttocks. A small incision is then made for pellet insertion. Once the pellet is inserted, the insertion site is covered with a small bandage.

What happens during the week following the insertion of the Biote pellet?

After pellet insertion, it’s best to eliminate lower body exercise. You can walk, but extraneous activity is not recommended. Swimming, hot tubs, and bathtubs are to be avoided; however, showers are permitted. After removal of the bandage, normal activity may resume.

How often is Biote pellet insertion necessary?

As each patient’s symptoms are unique, so is each patient’s path to hormone optimization. Your journey will be customized to fit your specific needs. It takes more than one to two weeks for your hormones to get out of balance, so expect it to take time to resolve.

What happens to the Biote pellet after insertion?

Since the pellets are bio-identical and contain nothing more than the hormones your body naturally produces, the pellets are completely dissolved and absorbed, leaving nothing behind.

 Estrogen Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

What is estrogen?

Estrogen is a hormone that naturally occurs in female and male bodies with many functions. In women, estrogen is most commonly associated with reproduction – it prompts the menstrual cycle and develops the female body’s secondary sex characteristics. However, in both sexes, estrogen is responsible for many facets of bone health, cholesterol metabolism and the thickness and collagen content of skin. In men, one form of estrogen called estradiol is responsible for the formation and maturation of sperm.

How do estrogen levels change as we age?

In women, estrogen levels are reduced as they  get older. Hormone levels in women drop most dramatically during perimenopause (immediately before menopause) and during menopause. In fact, after female menopause, many men may have higher estrogen levels than women! If a woman has had a radical hysterectomy including removal of both ovaries, her estrogen levels will struggle significantly– the organ primarily responsible for estrogen production is the ovaries. Adrenal glands also produce some estrogen, as does fat tissue.

What is BHRT?

Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy or BHRT is a form of treatment that has existed in the United States for many decades. Synthetic hormone replacement therapy is very commonly used in women to help the transitional state of menopause. Synthetic hormones are typically derived from pregnant mare urine. Bio-identical hormone replacement therapy uses plant based hormones whose structure is very closely identical to the natural hormones within the human body.

What is the advantage to bio-identical hormones over synthetic hormones?

It is said that bio-identical hormones, such as the ones used by Biote® Medical work better with the natural chemistry of the body because they most closely replicate the molecular structure of the hormones that naturally occur within the body.

What conditions may estrogen pellets be able treat?

Estrogen pellets are primarily prescribed to treat the effects of menopause. Estrogen pellets may also be able to treat chronically low mood, poor bone density and improve cardiovascular health. How can I get started with estrogen pellet therapy? Do you suffer from any of the conditions listed above? Get started with estrogen pellet therapy by contacting Dr. Douglis to learn more.

 Testosterone Therapy Frequently Asked Questions

Testosterone Replacement Therapy FAQs

What is testosterone?

Testosterone is a hormone naturally found inside both men and women that is responsible for many different critical body processes. Testosterone is produced in the testes and ovaries. Deficiency occurs as the body ages but suffering from the side effects of this is no longer unavoidable.

What are the different forms of testosterone available to supplementation?

BioTE® Medical provides bio-identical hormone replacement therapy in the form of pellets. Other forms of testosterone are tablets taken by mouth, tablets placed in the cheek and left to dissolve, muscle injections, patches applied to skin or as a gel. The forms of testosterone that do not release a consistent dosing may provide patients with inconsistent treatment or in the case of patches, short term consistent treatment. Pellets are the only form of testosterone replacement therapy that provides consistent dosing over a period of up to six months. This simple solution to testosterone supplementation has provided life-changing results for BioTE® Medical patients.

What is the difference between BHRT and other hormone therapies?

BHRT, or bio-identical hormone replacement therapy, uses hormones that most closely represent the ones found in the human body. The term bio-identical refers to how the hormones used in BHRT have a similar molecular structure to the ones found naturally. BHRT uses hormones from plant based sources rather than the animal based sources found in synthetic hormones.

What are testosterone pellets?

Testosterone pellets are powdered testosterone fused together into a pellet using stearic acid and no chemical binders. The compound pharmacies used provide high-quality pellets, with ingredients that are tested. This testing process gives pharmacists, doctors and patients confidence that only the best pellets are being administered to our patients.

What conditions can testosterone pellets treat?

Testosterone pellets are intended to treat a wide range of reproductive, emotional and non-reproductive conditions. Some of these include low energy, chronic exhaustion, sexual dysfunction, mood swings, irritability and many others. How can I get started with testosterone pellet therapy? Do you suffer from any of the conditions listed above? Get started with testosterone pellet therapy by contacting Dr. Douglis.
